Gown shopping 101: Yes, there is proper etiquette

Let’s take a look at some of the top etiquette rules when it comes to gown shopping.

Bridezilla rearing her ugly head? Planning a wedding and all of the festivities that go along with it can wreak havoc on your inner chi, especially when shopping for the wedding gown.

Etiquette is critical if you are to maintain your sanity during this busy time. In fact, etiquette rules apply to nearly every aspect of wedding planning, including shopping for that special dress. Let’s take a look at some of the top etiquette rules when it comes to gown shopping.

It’s All About Timing

Most wedding gown stores expect their customers to schedule an appointment prior to arrival and do not accept walk-ins. While some stores are located within retail shopping centre’s, this does not mean that you will be well-received if you just show up and expect to be waited on. Plan ahead, schedule an appointment and you will receive all of the much-needed attention you deserve.

Know Your Style

Don’t expect to be able to rummage through racks and racks of wedding dresses while at your appointment. Most wedding gown shops house their dresses in the back and present a few offerings at a time. It is better to have done your homework ahead of time. Bring in a magazine photo or be able to describe the style or type of gown you are interested in. This is a good starting place for both you and the attendant.

Plan on Taking Notes

Most bridal gown attendants make notes of alterations, changes or modifications that need to be done on the wedding dress, but it is helpful if you keep track of some of the items yourself. Keeping a log or journal of the sizes, designers or modifications that need to be made will help you feel more organized and in control of the entire wedding gown shopping experience.

Invite Those You Trust

The first wedding dress showdown may turn into just that, if you have a pushy mother or overbearing mother-in-law. Let’s face it, their ideas of beautiful, may not be yours. If you don’t want to walk down the aisle in puffy shoulders and western lace, you may need to avoid the invites for a select few until after you have found the perfect dress. Take along friends or relatives who are honest, yet graceful. Those who remember that it is your day, but have your best interest at heart are the perfect choice.
