Planning your wedding is a big undertaking and one that will consume your life for a while. Wedding planning can be very fun and satisfying and the result will be the wedding you envision. Sometimes, however, you’ll get bombarded with people who give you advice about your wedding. In fact, at times you may encounter someone who tries to completely take over the wedding planning. Dealing with this can be rather tricky because it’s usually someone very close to you – someone whose feelings you don’t want to hurt. So how should you deal with people trying to take over your wedding planning? Here are some tips to follow that will help you resolve these issues without hurt feelings.
Create a Timeline – One of the reasons that someone may want to help plan the wedding is due to concern over the timeline. You can alleviate these types of concerns by making a timeline that accounts for all the many planning activities that need to be completed. A timeline is an essential first step of wedding planning that will help you throughout the process.
Indicate Your Preferences – It’s important to speak up for yourself about what you like. If you don’t you could end up with a wedding that isn’t exactly as you want it. Always make sure that you voice your opinions so that they are heard. Most people who want to help will listen to your personal desires.
Learn How to Say No – Of course you want to be agreeable and you certainly don’t want to be labeled a “bridezilla”. But you need to stand up for your rights and for what you want. If someone is trying to take over or is doing something you don’t like you need to say so in the nicest way possible.
Delegate – Lots of people may want to help you but they don’t know where to begin. Keep people from taking over where they shouldn’t by giving them tasks they can accomplish. Review your list of tasks and when someone indicates that they want to help you simply ask them to take on one of your tasks.
Stay Organized – If you seem to be disorganized, an organized family member or friend may want to take over and help you. To keep them from doing so, stay organized. Use whatever method works for you (software, notebook, binder) and review your planning often to stay on track.
